Summer Short Programming Course with Access Data

If you would like to take your first steps in coding or have already started self-learning but need structured tutor support, this course is perfect for you!

Learn Python – one of the most popular coding languages used not only for data analysis, but also for web development, machine learning, and more. The purpose of the course is to teach the fundamentals of programming and programmatic thinking as a step toward building a new career in the Data & IT sectors. It is suitable for all learners.

The course will be delivered by an Edinburgh College lecturer and will be delivered on Wednesdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm over 4 weeks, from 3rd to 24th August 2022. If joining online, participants will be able to work flexibly - no live online classes will be provided.

Prior to the course start all participants will be asked to register for the Access to Industry Access Data programme, which will give them access to a dedicated Access Data caseworker to help with any issues they may face in or out of the course. Access to Industry can provide Day Saver tickets to all students commuting to the course using Lothian Buses.

If joining the course online, participants will need access to their personal IT equipment & Wi-Fi at home. Access Data caseworkers can offer assistance in sourcing this, but we cannot guarantee this will be possible. Access Data is for those living in Edinburgh who are unemployed or on a low income, want to move into education, training or employment that is related to IT or Data, and belong to at least one of the following groups:

  • have a disability or a learning difficulty,
  • are a woman,
  • are an Armed Forces veteran,
  • are from a minority ethnic background,
  • have parental responsibilities.

Basic IT skills are required to join the course, however, no formal qualifications are needed. Our tutors are dedicated to making the course as accessible as possible for students whose first language is not English. However, all participants should be comfortable studying in English with no additional language support. No formal certification is required but language skills will be assessed during an interview.
